Now, don't me wrong... sometimes you just want to fly solo, and that's okay, too. But when you're craving the company of like-minded travellers and don't have a solid plan in mind, some places are better than others for impromptu meetups and new connections. Here are some of the most nomad-friendly destinations worldwide to join the action.
1. Bali, Indonesia
A perennial favorite among digital nomads, Bali’s coworking spaces and coliving hubs are legendary. Canggu and Ubud are hotspots, offering fast Wi-Fi, community events, and tranquil settings for work and play. After work, meet up for a sunset beach gathering or join a yoga session.
It's not for everyone... Bali’s popularity comes with challenges like overcrowded hotspots, especially during peak tourist seasons. The tropical climate can also be intense, with high humidity and occasional flooding in the rainy season. Those who prefer quiet over buzzing social scenes may find Bali’s vibrant energy overwhelming. Even so, it's a sure place to meet people if that's what you're after.
Why it’s great for meetups:
Coworking spaces like TRIBAL Bali and Kinship Studios are bustling and sometimes host networking events.
Casual meetups over smoothie bowls or beachside dinners are a breeze.
2. Lisbon, Portugal
Lisbon is one of Europe’s rising stars for digital nomads. The city’s mild climate, affordable cost of living, and lively coworking scene make it ideal for spontaneous gatherings. Explore historic neighborhoods or enjoy a group dinner overlooking the Tagus River.
I will warn you that Lisbon’s hilly terrain and cobblestone streets can be challenging for those with mobility issues (ask me how I know). The city’s growing popularity among digital nomads has also driven up rental prices, making long-term stays less affordable for some.

3. Chiang Mai, Thailand
Chiang Mai is a digital nomad haven celebrated for its affordability, rich cultural heritage, and vibrant community. From its bustling night markets to serene temples, the city offers a unique blend of tradition and modernity. Coworking spaces are abundant, making it easy to find your tribe and collaborate on projects.
A word of warning here: Chiang Mai’s hot season can be intense, and the burning season (typically February to April) brings hazardous air quality that drives many nomads to relocate temporarily. While the city is known for its budget-friendly lifestyle, those seeking a bustling nightlife or coastal vibes might find it lacking. Aside from that, it's one of the OG nomad hotspots for good reason.

Coworking spaces like Punspace and Yellow offer community vibes, reliable internet, and great coffee.
The Nomad Coffee Club hosts weekly gatherings, perfect for meeting like-minded professionals.
The city’s proximity to nature allows for group activities like hikes to Doi Suthep or exploring nearby waterfalls.
4. Medellín, Colombia
Medellín has become a digital nomad hotspot, celebrated for its spring-like weather, modern infrastructure, and vibrant energy. The city’s transformation from its turbulent past to a hub of innovation and culture is nothing short of remarkable.
I spent some time there pre-COVID and loved El Poblado, with its trendy cafes, coworking spaces, and buzzing nightlife. And outside of work, Medellín offers a lot of fun experiences, from cable car rides with stunning views to day trips into lush coffee country.
A word of warning here: Medellín’s rapid rise in popularity has led to an increase in living costs in areas like El Poblado, and some may find the contrast between wealthy expat hubs and local neighborhoods stark. Additionally, while the city is generally safe in tourist areas, petty crime can still be an issue, so caution is advised. Those seeking a quieter or less urban destination may find Medellín’s vibrant pace a bit overwhelming.

Coworking spaces like Quokka are buzzing with activity and host events where you can meet new people.
Nightlife and rooftop bars provide the perfect backdrop for spontaneous hangouts and unwinding after work.

5. Tbilisi, Georgia
Tbilisi is quickly becoming a favorite among digital nomads. The city’s mix of old-world charm and modern amenities creates a unique environment for work and play. Stroll through the historic streets of the Old Town, enjoy the city’s famous sulfur baths, or dive into its dynamic food and wine scene. With a growing coworking community and a laid-back vibe, Tbilisi is ideal for fostering connections and collaborations.
While Tbilisi is beloved for its affordability, some may find the infrastructure less developed compared to other nomad hubs. Traffic can be chaotic, and internet speeds, while improving, may not be as fast as in Western cities. Additionally, those seeking warm weather year-round should note that Tbilisi experiences cold winters. Despite these minor drawbacks, the city’s charm and welcoming atmosphere more than make up for them.

The city’s proximity to the Caucasus Mountains and wine country makes weekend trips easy to organize, perfect for team-building or relaxing with friends.
Tbilisi’s vibrant cafe culture and social scene provide countless venues for casual gatherings and meaningful conversations.
6. Playa del Carmen, Mexico
Playa del Carmen blends stunning Caribbean beaches with a thriving digital nomad community, creating a perfect mix of work and leisure. It's also one of my personal favorites for quick getaways from Canada... in fact, I'm writing this from PDC!
By day, you can cowork from vibrant, well-equipped and sometimes air-conditioned spaces, and by night, unwind at beach meetups or explore the lively dining and nightlife scene. The town’s walkability and central location in the Riviera Maya make it easy to balance productivity with adventure, from cenote dives to cultural excursions.
Playa del Carmen’s rapid growth has brought an influx of tourists, leading to higher prices and a more crowded atmosphere in popular areas. Those seeking a quiet escape may find the town’s energetic vibe a bit overwhelming. I was also sad to see that the Selina here has shut down for good. Still, for social nomads looking to combine work with play, Playa delivers.

Events and activities like sunset parties and yoga sessions are easy to get in on, and perfect for mingling and making friends.
The beachfront setting offers plenty of opportunities for spontaneous gatherings, from casual chats at a beach bar to organizing group trips to nearby islands like Cozumel.
7. Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
Ho Chi Minh City is a fast-paced urban hub where tradition meets modernity. The city is a haven for foodies, with its street food markets serving iconic dishes like pho, banh mi, and fresh spring rolls. Coworking spaces are plentiful and affordable, offering amenities like air conditioning and high-speed Wi-Fi to counteract the tropical heat. The city’s low cost of living makes it possible to enjoy comfortable accommodations, daily cafe visits, and frequent dining out without breaking the bank.
On the flip side, the city’s notorious traffic can be chaotic and intimidating, especially for newcomers. Navigating a sea of motorbikes or crossing busy intersections can take some getting used to. Air quality is a concern, particularly during dry months, and the rainy season (May to November) often brings heavy downpours that can disrupt plans. Despite these challenges, Ho Chi Minh City rewards nomads with its vibrancy and cultural richness.

Coworking hubs like The Hive offer comfortable work environments with a community focus, and some even host workshops and networking events.
Street food tours and shared meals at markets like Ben Thanh Market or Vinh Khanh Street create opportunities to connect over local delicacies.
Weekend trips are easy to organize, with nearby destinations like the Mekong Delta or Vung Tau Beach for a quick escape from the city’s hustle.
8. Cape Town, South Africa
As far as nomad-friendly destinations go, Cape Town is right up there. It's known for its breathtaking scenery, from Table Mountain to pristine beaches, and a buzzing social scene that ranges from lively markets to trendy cafes. This is a place where you can spend the morning in a coworking space and the afternoon exploring the great outdoors. Everyone on the Nomadago team has been here, and it's a place we continue returning to!
For all its positives, Cape Town comes with some trade-offs. Safety can be a concern in certain areas, requiring travelers to stay vigilant and stick to well-known spots. Power outages (known as load-shedding) are common and may disrupt work routines without proper planning. Additionally, while affordable by Western standards, Cape Town’s costs can add up, especially in popular neighborhoods. Still, its beauty and vibrant community make it an unforgettable destination.

Biot combines stunning natural surroundings with a cozy community vibe, creating the perfect setting for work-life balance.
A word of warning here: While Biot’s tranquillity is a major draw, its quieter pace and small size may not appeal to those craving a bustling social scene. Public transportation is available but not as convenient as in larger cities, so having a car is often necessary to explore the region fully. Additionally, while the French Riviera is known for its beauty, it’s not the most budget-friendly destination, particularly for dining and accommodation outside coliving options.

10. Barcelona, Spain
Barcelona effortlessly blends urban sophistication with Mediterranean charm, making it a magnet for digital nomads. The city boasts a vibrant arts and culture scene, world-class architecture like Gaudí’s masterpieces, and a thriving coworking ecosystem. With its sandy beaches just a stone’s throw from the city center, nomads can switch seamlessly between work and relaxation. Tapas bars, bustling plazas, and a lively nightlife ensure there’s always something happening to spark connections.
Barcelona’s popularity comes at a cost—literally. The city can be expensive, particularly in trendy neighborhoods like El Born or Gràcia, and accommodation prices continue to rise. Summers bring large crowds of tourists, which can make some areas feel overcrowded and less authentic. Those who prefer quieter settings or less structured social scenes may find the hustle of Barcelona’s vibrant lifestyle a bit overwhelming.

Excellent public transportation is a big bonus here–even I managed not to get lost, and that's rare! It’s easy to organize group outings to nearby attractions like Montjuïc Castle, Sitges, or the iconic Costa Brava.
